    Lattice defect

Materials are grouped according to certain types of atoms, the arrangement of which is called a lattice . Starting from a perfect lattice structure, the strength of a material is calculated from attractive and repulsive forces acting between its atoms. However, the actual strength of a material is considerably lower than the calculated value because the atomic lattice contains voids and dislocations. Material failure is therefore often due to these defects.
