Soldering terminology

A very slow cooling of a solder joint or a solder cone can lead to a strong growth of the crystal grains which results in a rough, uneven surface of the solder. This is known as grainy solder joint. Since the surface has poor reflective qualities and is not shiny, one also speaks of a dull solder joint.
